DRIFT
= Martin Tétreault + eRikm + Arnaud Rivière + DJ Sniff
& listenning session-conference by Samon Takahashi

4 legendary turntablists for a performance-gig, brought together by Yann Leguay (Phonotopy / Artkillart)

Each of these four artists developed his own original instrumental practice for vinyl turntabling, between technic virtuosity, noise and genius improvisation.

This concert will be recorded for the release of an experimental vinyl plate with 4 intermingled microgrooves, thus providing a random reading, the first release in DRIFT collection of Artkillart record label.

Martin Tétreault (1958, Québec, Canada) is an internationally-renowned Montreal DJ and improviser, originally came from the milieu of the visual arts. His path has been marked out by various productions on compact disc and live performances with a range of collaborators: Diane Labrosse, René Lussier, Jean Derome, Michel F. Côté, I8U, Otomo Yoshihide, Kevin Drumm, Xavier Charles, Ikue Mori, and many more. He has abandoned the musical citation that he had been using in his work since he began in 1985 and now explores the intrinsic qualities of the turntable: the sound of the motor, of interference, and so on. He also uses needles, prepared surfaces (with thanks to John Cage), and small electronic instruments. The bruitiste approach of remaining analogical has allowed him to leave behind the question But what about royalties? and to get himself invited to electronic-music events! When he feels the need for a break from music, he goes back to the visual arts, where he sands, scrapes, cuts up books and magazines, and so on.

Arnaud Rivière

Self-taught musician, Arnaud Rivière practises free improvisation, playing solo, in groups and through collaborations, since the late 90s. Using a rudimentary electroacoustic device built around an Electrophone (turntable) repaired (numerous times), a prepared-mixer and some microphones / sensors, many electronics that need manipulation, to make it brief. Dj sniff (Takuro Mizuta Lippit) believes in the instrumental autonomy of the turntable and the musicianship of the DJ. He is a turntable musician working in the field of improvised and experimental music. His music focuses on the live reconstruction and narratization of the phonographically amplified - the music, the sound, the technology and the past. To achieve this, he uses a unique setup consisting of hand-made hardware interfaces and a custom Max/MSP software along with one turntable and DJ mixer. He is also a concert/event curator for electronic music and a researcher of music technology.

Since 2005 he has been involved with STEIM’s (Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music, Amsterdam) R&D lab and is currently its Artistic Director.

DRIFT is a project curated by Yann Leguay, who lives and works in Brussels. His approach to sound design for installation, performance and film centers on the materiality of sound. Both a visual artist and sound maker, and reverse, he has participated in numerous exhibitions including «Radiodays» at de Appel Amsterdam, «Le Nouveau Festival» at Centre Pompidou in Paris and «French May» in Hong Kong.  He also composes sound tracks for short films, as Planet A of Momoko Seto (2008).  In different projects, Cutter-Off / Wireless / Never-Record / RadioFreeRobots, he regularly performs live improvisation in concert places and multimedia festivals.

In introduction to the concert a listenning session/conference by Samon Takahashi (Gol / Planam).

Samon Takahashi is a visual and sound artist based in Paris, France. He draws from rational organizational systems and their capacity to classify almost everything to compose in a rigorously crazy manner. (Fiction and/or laughing are also an integral part of his work). In front of this work we experience both the complexity of a demonstration and the failure of rational system jeopardized by absurdity.
